Designing a Senior Portrait session that is ALL ABOUT YOU
Before your session, I will talk to you to custom design your session. In advance of this discussion, think about your interests and how you would want to be photographed. I enjoy getting creative with senior portrait sessions so please suggest locations or other ideas you may have so your portrait session will show your personality and interests. I try to ensure that every senior portrait session is different - just like every senior I photograph.
Clothing suggestions Keep it Simple:
YOU should be the main item of interest in your portrait, not your clothes. Therefore, keep a few things in mind when selecting your clothing. Have your clothes and accessories ready the night before your session. Select clothing that reflects your personality and style. Make certain your clothes are clean and free of wrinkles. Be aware of the number of clothing changes you are allowed in the session you have selected. For each outfit, put your accessories (including shoes) in a large ziplock bag and attach it to the hanger.
Solid Colors Photograph Best.
Loud, bold patterns, large checks and stripes tend to be distracting in portraits. Horizontal stripes can make even the thinnest person look heavier. Solid colors allow the eyes of the viewer to go to your face because they are not distracted by bright colors, bold patterns, etc. Select colors that you look best in. Is there a color that tends to bring compliments from friends every time you wear it? Then, that’s the color you should consider wearing for your Senior Portrait! But, sometimes it’s fun to break all the rules and wear that wild shirt or your most favorite bright orange sweater and that’s ok. We’ll choose different backgrounds or locations for those clothes. Bring lots of clothes to choose from—that way we have a lot to work with for mixing and matching. We probably won’t be able to use everything, though. Get creative! Bring hats, cool shoes, boots, jackets, jewelry, scarves—you name it! Got an awesome prom dress? Feel free to bring that, too. I love a good prom dress in a grungy location—it’s fun and unexpected. If you’re unsure about something, bring it anyway. Avoid strong contracts between pants and shirt. If you have a dark shirt or sweater, wear dark pants or jeans. If you have a light top, wear light colors on the bottom. Once again, if you wear colors with a strong contrast between the top and bottom the eye of the viewer will go to your clothing and not your face.
What colors work best?
Long sleeves always photograph better than spaghetti straps or strapless or short sleeves. The upper arms tend to look heavy in photographs. Long sleeves will make you look slimmer. For traditional or yearbook poses wear medium to dark colors and long sleeves. For contemporary portraits wear your favorite styles complete with jewelry and accessories.
Outdoor portraits:
Dark colors for the bottom and medium to dark colors for the tops. Take into consideration the colors that will be around you when you are photographed (i.e. the colors of nature) and wear colors that will coordinate with those colors. Good colors to wear for an outdoor portrait are black, dark green, olive, brown, tan, light blue, navy and cream. The colors to avoid outside are yellow, orange, bright pink, red, pastels and white. Most importantly, wear something you like and something that you think you look good in! If you like what you are wearing, you will feel more comfortable and confident during your portrait session.
